Wildlife Crimes in Malaysia

Wildlife smuggling and trafficking activities are increasing rapidly worldwide. Illegal wildlife trade is the third most lucrative criminal industry in the world after drugs and firearms. Wildlife crimes do not exclude Malaysia from being involved. Shockingly, the increasing numbers were supported with the existence of platforms like social medias and online store applications. If we are able to pretend like a potential buyer, we could easily straight away find the suppliers after searching them in facebook or instagram. Try to put in keywords such as "wildlife", "exotic", "pets", and "rare species" in the search box and you will find a list of exotic animal sellers, not just locals but also abroad. Strangely, the available exotic animals in market include those rare species and obviously they were trafficked from another countries. EXOTIC PETS Most popular species demanded by buyers as pets are Malayan Pangolin ( tenggiling ), baby monkeys , an...

Miracle Fruit does exist!

Have you ever heard about miracle fruit? We refer the "miracle" terms to its ability to turn taste of sour to sweet taste. How does it work? Look like baby tomatoes but redder color. Eating this fruit before taking another sour fruit like lemon or starfruit will convert the sour into sweet taste. The research showed that the adaptation effect is caused by the glycoprotein molecule, named miraculin. When the fleshy part of the fruit is eaten, this molecule binds to tongue's taste buds, causing foods to taste sweet. At neutral pH, miraculin binds and blocks the receptors, but at low pH (resulting from ingestion of sour foods) miraculin binds proteins and becomes able to activate the sweet receptors, resulting in the perception of sweet taste. This effect lasts until the protein is washed away by saliva, up to about 30 minutes. This fruit is also known as other names like miracle berry, magic berry, miraculous fruit, ajbayun, asaa, buah ajaib (in Malay), or sc...

Some benefits human as food, some acted as teacher that shows us how to live and survive, and surely at the end of everything, all of them exist to balance the world ecosystem. Other than those, here are some fun facts about animals adaptation to nature  that I collected through my watch to Animal Planet Channel. 1. Baby Elephant eat mother's poop! That sounds gross at the first heard, in fact, eating poop is crucial for the survival and well being of many young animals such as hippos, warthogs, rhinos, and elephants. Elephants are hind gut fermenters. Meaning that once the food has passed through the stomachs, and into small intestines, it then enters the large intestine for the digestion process where bacteria causes fermentation helps to break down the food. However, baby elephants are not naturally born with that necessary bacteria in their gut. The best mechanism to adapt that situation (which is allow them to ob...

What is TRASH HERO?

26 Volunteers from 17 chapters in Malaysia, get training and share knowledge with each other for 3 days in Mersing, Johor, Malaysia. The family meetings have become key engagements in Trash Hero organisation’s calendar: as a diverse and dispersed network, they provide the leaders with the vital time and space for immersive, face to face communication that helps to equip and motivate volunteers for the coming months. Although the general perception of mental illness has improved over the years, studies show that stigma against mental illness is still high-powered, massively due to lack of education and media stereotypes, and that people tend to attach negative stigmas to mental health conditions at a far higher rate than to other diseases and disabilities, such as heart disease, diabetes or cancer. Stigma affects not only the number seeking treatment, but also the number of resources available for proper treatment.
