Plastic Free Ocean Campaign

The 'Plastic Free Ocean' program in conjunction with the National Environment Day and World Clean-up Day, was held for the first time in Tioman Island, Malaysia on September 16 and 17, 2019 and was joined by YB Mrs Isnaraissah Munirah Majlis, Deputy Minister of MESTECC. The program was a collaboration between MESTECC, Pahang State Marine and Resource Management Branch, Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA), Alam Flora, Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), Head of Village & Tekek villagers and does not forget NGOs in particular Trash Hero Malaysia and Reef Check Malaysia.

Plastic Free Ocean was aimed at creating awareness and strengthening partnerships in addressing the marine litter issue. In general, pollution caused by coastal areas is damaging to coastal ecosystems and also has an impact on the economy, and plastic is a common waste. We may become one of the heroes resolving this issue with the following:

1. Say no to plastic straw. Replace with multiple use of bamboo or stainless steel straw (mostly available in online store).

2. No groceries plastic bag. Replace with own woven or paper bag.

3. Bring own drink bottle and food container.

We finally have removed almost 300 kg of nets and single use plastics. Lets us all say no to single use plastic and move towards sustainable practices.

What is TRASH HERO?

26 Volunteers from 17 chapters in Malaysia, get training and share knowledge with each other for 3 days in Mersing, Johor, Malaysia. The family meetings have become key engagements in Trash Hero organisation’s calendar: as a diverse and dispersed network, they provide the leaders with the vital time and space for immersive, face to face communication that helps to equip and motivate volunteers for the coming months. As the meeting is primarily for the chapter leaders, which obviously I am not, I only spend the time with them during the beach clean-up at Air Papan Beach on the third day.
