Gunung Lambak, An Iconic Landmark of Kluang

Kluang or Flying foxes in English, is located in the center of Johor, Malaysia. This is the only district in Johor that is not at least partially surrounded by sea. Why is it called Kluang? Older people in Kluang agree that it came from the name of a mammal that flew in the night in search of fruit, the Malayan Flying Fox.

This animal considered to be the largest bat in the world. There is also the story of an animal that attacked a fruit farm and had to be called a shaman to drive them away. However, this story cannot be verified by people here. Obviously a village called Kampung Kluang existed before 1910 near this town. The presence of these large bats may have been due to deforestation in central Johor for the purpose of constructing railways and settlements in Kluang.

Its geographical factor also be the reason of the abundance of flying foxes in Kluang. Gunung Lambak (Mount Lambak) is one of the favourite habitat of this species. Although these days are quite rarely to find the species at the base but there are still a few we can see at the top and one third of the mountain's height. The summit is 510m above sea level.

Gunung Lambak has been developed as a recreational and tourist attraction called Mount Lambak Recreational Forest. Pathways and wooden bridges make it relatively easy to climb to the summit, and a picnic spot at the base of the mountain has car parking, benches, a small children's playground and toilets. There are also camping facilities and water park.

Mammals found on Gunung Lambak include the Long-tailed macaque, Pig-tailed macaque and Dusky leaf monkey. The Horn Bill couple can always be seen at the base area in evening time, and they love to communicate with people. Try to say Hi to them, they will definitely respond to your warm greetings. Reptiles like Malayan Brown snake and amphibian like river toad are among the species exist in Gunung Lambak.

If you are passing by Kluang (meanwhile heading to Mersing for island destinations), do not forget to pay a visit to Gunung Lambak and enjoy the sound of crickets, birds, and small waterfall at the base of mountain. Also, enjoy the forest smell coming from the damp moss, rain, wet tree trunks, herbs, and flowers. Welcome to Kluang!
